Daylily: A Landscaping "Wild" Edible

This video covers the identification, harvesting, and preparation of common daylily (Hemerocallis fulva.) It discusses use of the shoots, tubers, flowers, and flower buds; and covers some poisonous look alikes.   

A few notes of caution that I review in the video: 

-There are many cultivars within the Hemerocallis genus, and there is some controversy over whether all of them are edible. If you want to play it safe, be sure to stick to Hemerocallis fulva, the common daylily. 

-Don't assume you can eat any plant with "lily" in the name. True lilies (in the genus Lilium) are very different from daylilies, and some true lilies are poisonous. 

-Some people experience allergic reactions to daylilies, especially when eaten raw. As is recommended with any new food, try only a little bit at first, then wait a day to see if any allergic reactions appear. 

-Daylily is considered invasive in many states, so be careful not to spread it!
